Tool names

Hi All,

To be taken seriously in industry it's important to use the correct name to describe tools and processes; to find the names of many of the tools we used in the course you can visit the website of the supplier that sold them to us ... http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/S2234

Good luck with finishing everything off!

Extension due to ANZAC day

Hi All,

I've had a request from a few students for an extension as the workshop is closed on ANZAC day.

This seems reasonable, so I'll extend the submission date by an extra day ... you now have until 11:59pm on Wednesday April 27th to complete your first skin.

Metal Shaping video

Hi All,

This video is quite long but well worth watching ... this expert metal shaper Wray Schelin uses the same techniques we've been using in class, and has great advice regarding developing a 3 dimensional shape.

Will be invaluable if you are struggling to understand how you need to shape your aluminium to get the desired result.

Meet in the DesignLab 24hr space

Hi All,

Just a friendly reminder that we'll be meeting in the DesignLab 24hr space from now on.

Today you'll be completing your inductions, making test pieces (cutting, bending, forming or assembling components) or speaking with us about your discipline specific found objects. Better still, you'll show us some models you've created in 123dCatch.

Aluminium supplier

Hi All,

I've always purchased my aluminium sheet from Dalsteel Metals and have been pleased with their service and prices.

http://www.dalsteel.com.au/contacts/

I spoke to Ainslie there and she quoted me $36+gst for the 1mm sheets and $56+gst for the 1.6mm sheets (sheets are 2400mm x 1200mm, so plenty to share between two or three of you). These prices include a UNSW discount, so make sure you mention that.

These are all for 5005 aluminium ... which is the grade I recommend. Google it for an explanation of the strengths and weaknesses of different grades of aluminium.

They are out on the m5 motorway towards Liverpool. So if you can get access to a van you'll save the delivery fee.

I haven't priced other commercial alternatives, but I know you'll pay much much more if you buy smaller sheets from Bunnings. Feel free to shop around though, and if you find someone offering better value then let us know in the comments below.

Finally, there might be a business opportunity for an entrepreneurial student here.
